Google’s Gemini Gets ChatGPT-Style Memory — And a ‘Secret Chat’ Mode for Your Private Questions

Google is stepping up the game with its Gemini AI app, rolling out two major features that will make conversations smarter and more private — a ChatGPT-like memory upgrade and a new “Temporary Chat” mode that hides your chats from history.

Announced on Wednesday, these changes aim to give users more control, personalization, and enhanced privacy.

Gemini’s ‘Personal Context’: Your AI Now Remembers You
The big highlight is the new “personal context” feature. Much like ChatGPT’s memory, Gemini will now remember key details from your past conversations — your likes, preferences, and important information you’ve shared — so chats feel more natural and relevant over time.

This means you won’t have to keep repeating yourself. Your AI buddy will already know what you like, making interactions smoother. And yes, you can manage or delete this stored information at any time.

Right now, personal context is rolling out to users of the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries. It’s switched on by default, but you can turn it off. Google says the feature will also come to the Gemini 2.5 Flash model and more countries soon.

Temporary Chat: Private Questions Stay Private
Not everything needs to stay in your history — and Google knows it. Enter “Temporary Chat,” a mode where you can ask personal or even embarrassing questions without them showing up in your recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity.

It’s similar to Google Search’s Incognito mode — these chats won’t be used to personalise your AI or train Google’s models. They do, however, remain available for up to 72 hours so you can revisit the answers or give feedback.

Other Changes You’ll Notice
Google is also renaming “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity.” Any conversations saved here will help improve Google’s services — but you can switch this off anytime. For ultimate privacy, Google recommends using the new Temporary Chat option.

With these updates, Gemini is looking more like ChatGPT — but with Google’s twist. For anyone who values both personalisation and privacy, this rollout could be a game changer.
